Position Responsibilities
ICU Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.  Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Nurses provide care for patients with a wide range of ailments that are a result of complications from surgery, accidents, infections, and severe breathing problems. ICU patients are usually unstable and require close, constant monitoring and interventions. In addition to basic nursing care, responsibilities of ICU Nurses include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide round-the-clock Nursing care for patients with a wide range of ailments who are critically ill and are in the process of recovery; monitor the progress of the patients under their care.
  • Provide age and culturally appropriate care to patients.
  • Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans; responsible for noting symptoms, health concerns, health improvements, as well as family concerns.
  • Monitor and provide nutritional assessment and specialized feedings; track urine output.
  • Change dressings; insert catheters; start IVs (both central venous and arterial); assist with the insertion or discontinuation of CV catheters, arterial lines, external ventricular drains, epidural catheters, and endotracheal tubes.
  • Administer infusion therapy including IV fluids, antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and electrolytes.
  • Monitor and adjust specialized equipment used on patients such as ventilators to ensure minimal risk of infection.
  • Prepare, administer, and record prescribed medications; report adverse reactions to medications or treatments.
  • Monitor vital signs such as blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate; initiate corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology; communicate the patient’s condition to the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Follow continuous cardiac and respiratory monitor readings, such as EKG tracings, O2 stats, CVP/arterial line waveforms, if applicable, and report any observed changes.
  • Analyze lab results.
  • Assist treating physician during examination, treatment, and procedures which can include life-saving situations.
  • Utilize analytical skills to provide efficient patient care to manage critical situations in a timely, safe manner; perform emergency procedures in addition to making routine observations and monitoring each patient's symptoms and progress. 
  • Instruct, educate, and communicate with the patient’s family in a compassionate manner to provide information about treatments, medical options, and precautions; provide education and support to family members faced with critical decisions such as discontinuing life support and deciding how to care for people with brain injuries; assist with meeting the educational, physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of the family according to professional practice standards and institutional policies and procedures. 
  • Participate in discharge planning.
  • Record all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format, and on the appropriate forms.
  • Comply with protocols, procedures, and safety policies of a healthcare facility.

Qualifications/Skills Requirements/Education/Licensure

  • Minimum 2+ years of recent ICU or Critical Care experience required.
  • Registration and current RN licensure in good standing required.
  • Current basic cardiac life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certifications required.
  • Knowledge of how to perform accurate drug dose calculations; knowledge of how to use and adjust complex and specialized equipment like ventilators.
  • Knowledge of medications and general health conditions.
  • Ability to provide culturally competent care with a strong focus on patient service; follow physician orders; properly document medical information.
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate communication with various members of the healthcare team, patients, and families; effective listening skills.
  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
  • Multilingual skills (beyond that of English) in languages appropriate to the patient populations served by the medical center preferred.
  • Relevant clinical experience and/or specialty certification required for certain practice areas, e.g., enterstomal therapy, epidemiology, peri-operative areas.
  • Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues and conduct quality improvement research utilization projects.
  • Ability to effectively delegate appropriate patient care activities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills appropriate to the patient populations served.
  • Physical ability to meet the core job responsibilities in accordance with practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served.
  • Ability to effectively manage stress due to critical issues related to patient care, the changing organizational climate, and personnel issues.
  • Must adhere to HIPAA guidelines and maintain confidentiality regarding patient and Agency proprietary information.

RN ICU Minimum Requirements:

  • Current Florida Registered Nurse Licensure
  • 2 or more years of current experience in ICU or Critical Care nursing
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current Physical
  • Current PPD/TB
  • Current Flu Vaccination
